Also students will sometimes write their ID in the numeric ID field (boxes above ID bubbles) and let their writing spill over the boxes. If this writing gets too close to the bubbles it can slow or stop scanning depending on how much it spills over.
Why won't GradeCam scan?
Here are some troubleshooting tips for scanning:
- All digits in the student ID *must be filled in *on student assignment (no ID needed for answer key). Use a zero in the beginning box if needed. Example – class with five and six digit ID’s use six digit forms and fill in the first digit with a zero for students with five digits.
- Too much lighting can affect the ability to scan. Try dimming the lights or shading the test sheet to see if that is helpful.
- Try to focus the camera lens (for GradeCam cameras: twist the black ring around the lens).
- Make sure the entire exam rectangle can be seen by the camera: all four corners of the test can be seen and a thumb or pencil mark is not obstructing the rectangle.
- The image cannot be upside down when viewing. If it is go to** settings and select **scanning. Check the flip image box.
- The number of filled in answers on the physical answer key must match the number of questions that you enter into GradeCam's assignment information
- If a test form with 70 or 100 questions is copied too small, try enlarging it to see if this help. But, remember that the entire rectangle around the bubbles must be in the camera view.

Our cameras came with an anti-glare sheet for viewing things like glossy magazines. The translucent plastic sheet helps scan pencil bubbles that sometimes look like blanks because of reflection. We have also used translucent report covers from Office Depot's copy department.

I have recently had trouble with gradecam... after new update??? what is the statement above about number of filled in answers must match number of questions. Are you saying if a student leaves an answer blank it will not scan it???
I agree... very moody lately but for the last several days I really can't scan at all and as stated no way to manually enter so totally stuck. Was working great and suddenly horrible.

Here's an example of what's meant:
If I setup a new assignment and say there are going to be 16 questions, then the Answer Key must have 16 questions. If I tried to scan an answer key with less than 16 questions, it won't scan. For student assignments, the number does not matter.

I am having the same scanning problem. I've got a 25 question test. The answer sheet is completely filled out. I've tried scanning over a 3 day period with different light conditions and different devices. I rebubbled an answer sheet to see if the bubbling was sloppy. The student ID is completely filled out, etc. I've had relatively good luck with this system until now and am considering purchasing this, but I'd like to have consistent results, because it looks like I'll have to hand grade these 55 tests tonight. I'm using the iPad app with the iPad camera and the webcams on 2 different PCs - are these cameras not good enough now?
If your answer key won't scan in, my first guess is that the number of questions on the assignment doesn't match the number of questions on the physical assignment, ie. when the quiz was created it was set to something other than 25 questions.
From the PC, can you try upgrading your plugin, and then try scanning your answer key on the GradeCam Plugin page here: http://downloads.gradecam.com
Testing your scanning on that page will see if the plugin & camera are working and would help isolate the issue.
I am having difficulty scanning as well. I've got a 20 question assessment, and there are 20 questions on the form. I checked to make sure my assignment also said "20 question exam". All students filled in their six digit ID's, as usual. I manually entered the answer key in step 1, as usual.
I tried dimming half the lights in the classroom, and then the other half to see if lighting was the issue. I am using it with the compatable IPEVO Point 2 View document camera. I find that GradeCam scanning has become inconsistent (especially over the past month). It worked just fine in class earlier in the year, and I was able to use it earlier in the week to scan an assignment. I upgraded the plugin using the link listed above (comment dated 4/21). The camera is working fine (shows up clearly in the screen in student view) and we are making sure all four lines/corners are showing in the screen. I tried looking for an app for my iPhone, but it looks like it's only available for iPads at this point, and we don't have wifi access for iPads at school. I would even go through and enter them manually at this point (so I could at least gather information from the summary pages until the issue is resolved), but manual entry is not an option that I can find anywhere. Please help!
Don't enter them manually! It sounds like something odd is going on with your system. Ipevo cameras works great. Try updating your Plugin and see if your able to scan on the Plugin page in step three.

Make sure to choose the correct version of browser you are using and clear all Favorites/Bookmarked sites.

All of a sudden teachers at my school are having problems scanning with their cameras. We are getting the warning message that the lighting maybe affecting the camera. These are all people that have used the camera for several years now. Not sure why all of a sudden we are having the issue. We haven't changed anything on our end. It's also popping up and not reading the 7th number of our student's id or some of their answers. The bubbles are colored in darkly and complete, and we are scanning the whole black box...
Please have your teachers close out of GradeCam and go to downloads.gradecam.com and update the plugin. Log back into GradeCam to see if this resolves the issue. If the problem still persists, send a screenshot of one of the forms that will not scan under the scan window so I can see the form trying to scan (along with the error message if one shows). Send it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
