Please go back to the OLD version

 This new version is terrible.

I used to be able to scan 5 classes (120) students in about 5 min.

Now it takes over 30 (on a good day)

Your algorithm is picking up the name and test title area and trying to reconcile the answer fields from within the wrong box. It is BEYOND bad. I can't even imagine how this was pushed through beta.

Gone from best service to worst over night.

Hi Paul,

If the form is trying to scan to the wrong assignment, then you have printed the forms for the specific assignment.  If the assignment name is on the form, then you can only scan for that assignment. If you want a form that will scan for any assignment, then you will need to print a generic form.

Please send along a screenshot to support@gradecam.com of a form that will not scan correctly in the scan window so we are able to see if there is anything that needs corrected.

The form code reads what information was available within the parameters of the form being printed.

Thank you,
~Donna

Hi Donna,

Is that what you read from my post? That I'm trying to scan the WRONG assignment? Seriously!?

I've been using Gradecam for over 4 years and brought you 19 referrals because I believe in this service and supported and recommended it to my colleagues. I have used it successfully all that time.

What I am saying is that the new version breaks the essentail functionality of the old one. The new forms are not read as quickly as the old ones (on either my laptop or my ipad). There are numerous scanning issues, including but not limited to, the algorithm is trying to include the STUDENT NAME AND TEST NAME FIELDS (at the top of the form) with the answer field (inside the box). How do I know this? Because it repeatedly draws a box around the student name and test name and then it can't find the answer field.

On the rare (5%) occasion that it properly detects a scan, and replies with a tone, it still takes about 3 -5 secs to record the answers and rest the camera for the next scan. This has never happened before.

Most of the time however, it does not detect the proper area and can't scan the test.

The old version had a much more robust algorithm. You could hold the form in any orientation, in or out of the focal plan of the camera, wrinkled paper or not. It would even successfully scan a form BEFORE I was done adjusting it.

This current version is half-baked, unfinished, not-ready-for-prime-time, and tried to fix something that was never broken in the first place.

Had this been 4 years ago, I would have moved on and not given this a second look.

In GradeCam Insight, you did not have the option of placing the assignment name on the form.  With your comment: the algorithm is trying to include the STUDENT NAME AND TEST NAME FIELDS (at the top of the form) with the answer field (inside the box) - this is what I was referring to with the scanning. It is reading the student name and assignment because that is what is in the form code at the bottom of the form. If you have printed the form with the assignment name on the form, yes, it is looking for that assignment which is embedded into the code at the bottom of the form.

In GradeCam Insight, you were essentially creating generic forms for every assignment and had to scan in that assignment only. With the form code at the bottom of the form now, you can scan several assignments all at once, and scores will go to the correct assignment without having to be in each specific assignments.

GradeCam Go! has been tested for over a year and much more efficient than GradeCam Insight.  We believe moving forward that GradeCam Go is much more functional and has many more great benefits in the reporting and features we have added.

We realize some may not like the new platform and have to make decisions that are necessary for their needs in their classroom.  We are here to support those who want to move forward with GradeCam Go!

Thank you,
~Donna

Donna,

When the program scans, it draws a dark colored boxes around the answer field. There are two different colors. The first darker, when the scan is first finding the field, the second lighter when it finds the field and tries to detect the answer grid.

Now, in the old version, the first scan always found the answer field, regardless of the condition of the form. I've scanned folded and wrinkled forms without issue. I have even used the answer form for short answer and essay responses which never caused an issue, so long as the students did not write in the answer field. In fact, I DID have the student names and assignment on the top of the form (two passes through the printer solves that problem), and it never skipped a beat.

Now, the first dark color scan (the one that is trying to find the answer field) is drawing the box around the student name and assignment text at the top of the form, outside the answer field. This is causing scanning failures. Also, it is not impossible to scan a form that has been folded or crumpled.

I've checked the forum here, and I am not the first or only mention of scanning issues after the update. Tested or not, you have lost functionality and stability. I can't speak to the trade off of what was gained by this loss, but it is a loss none the less.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your feedback.  Would you be willing to talk with me more about the issues that you are facing with GradeCam?  If so, please email me directly at debbie@gradecam.com so we can set up a phone call or webinar so we can see what you are experiencing.

I agree with Paul. The scanning is much slower and it's missing questions too. Students are clearly answering a question and the systems just misses it. This never happened with Insight. I don't care about forms and names. My students just bubble in their ID and I only use a 15 question form and a 75 question form. No one needs the other stuff. Keep it simple and effective.

Hi,

But this doesn't address the loss of functionality. There is a serious interruption of workflow and with 100+ students, the loss of time is significant.

The old version saved me time. This new buggy version is costing me time.

Hi Paul,

Were you able to email Debbie Delaney - she asked for that in an earlier post?

Thank you,

Hi Jamie,

Can you share with me which assignment is missing scans in your account?  It helps to have a screenshot of the form and how GradeCam is reading the form to see why it would be skipping. Are you saying it is skipping because you are trying to place the forms down before the last one has scanned?

Thank you,
~Donna

I agree that the new version does not seem like an improvement.  The scanning speed is much slower.  Sometimes gradecam will not recognize the camera so I have to switch to a different browser in the middle of scanning an assignment.  This is an issue because I usually have students scan their own forms during class.  It used to scan in less than a second, but now I routinely get a long line of students waiting to scan, which causes classroom disruptions.  I also don't like having to take the extra step to transfer scores.  I loved being able to just hit F8 in the old version while still on the scanning screen.  I also have problems with students thinking it scanned when it didn't--like maybe 5 in a class period.  Now if students don't have their sheet in exactly the right spot it won't scan and they keep moving it around trying to get it in the right spot, which further delays the scan.  It used to be so much quicker and easier.

One of the beauties of Insight was that it was simple and quick.  If you offered the ability to switch back to the old version like at the end of 2016 I would go back.

Paul and Lance,

I agree. The previous version on GradeCam was amazing! I have referred many educators to this site over the years. I am now having the same issues and do not feel comfortable telling others about this program. I was to do a technology session for my district and part of that session was going to be on GradeCam but I removed it from the session because I have been having so many issues. GradeCam PLEASE fix these problems or go back to the prior version.

Good morning, Lance,

Thank you for your comments.  Please send along screenshots of any form that will not scan quickly as the scanning time should not be different from Insight.

We want to help troubleshoot this for you.  Please send any screenshots to support@gradecam.com

The one extra step for transferring was added as we had many requests from teachers as yourself that they would have the option to change from percentage to points for any given assignment without having to go into their settings which would have taken several more steps. So just having to click on  the transfer button is just one more click but we feel this addresses many needs of the requests.

Thank you,
~Donna

It's interesting that you mention the transfer function.

I just had the opportunity to try last night for the first time with the new version. Same gradebook, same computer, same OS, same browser. But it no longer works.

Hi Paul,

Are you clicking on the transfer button and then leaving that dialogue box open when transferring? You do  not want to close the dialogue box when it comes up.

Please go to downloads.gradecam.com and just make sure you have the latest plugin installed and then reboot your computer.  I would be happy to do a quick webinar with you to help troubleshoot.

Thank you,
~Donna

Yes I am.

I've tried multiple ways and even tried different browsers and changing the hot keys.

This new version broke this as well.
